School History

Northside Elementary is located in Woodford County in the historic town of Midway, part of the Bluegrass region of Kentucky.  Our school  is surrounded by gently rolling hills and horse farms. This is a scene from our backyard.

Midway is located approximately "midway" between Lexington and the state capital of Frankfort.  Both cities are about 18 miles away.  Midway was built by the Lexington and Ohio Railroad in 1835.  It was Kentucky's first railroad town, and a train still rolls through the center of town on Railroad Street.  Midway is also home to Midway College, founded in 1847 as a college for women.

Northside is one of four elementary schools serving Woodford County, but it is the only public school in Midway (all other Woodford County schools are in Versailles, the county seat). The school opened for the 1992-93 school year. Before that year the north end of the county was served by Midway Elementary (see photo below). The old school has been converted into apartments.  Northside's  attendance area was expanded to include part of the northern section of  Versailles. The school has grown and continues to grow as new housing is developed in Versailles and Midway. Northside has been designated as an "Inviting School" by the International Alliance for Invitational Education.  With our small student population and location in a small town, Northside is able to retain a "family" atmosphere where every student is known by name.
