Strategies to Promote Fluent Speech 1. Think about what you want to say before you say it. 2. Practice speech breathing. (Take a deep breath in, and let it out slowly as you say a word) 3. Speak slowly. 4. Say it again! When a child says a dysfluent word, have them try that word or sentence again using the above strategies. 5. Use gentle onset. Have them say the word softly 6. Make a list. Make a list of words stuttered more frequently and practice these words using slow easy speech and strategies listed above. 7. Take a minute. If the child is in a moment of severe stuttering, suggest they wait a minute and then try again. 8. Be patient. Listen to what the person is saying and try not to focus on the manner in which it is said. NEVER punish or penalize someone for a moment of stuttering. Watch your body language when a person is stuttering. Negative body language or non-verbal signals can worsen a person's moment of dysfluency. |
