August 22, 2008 MRS. RICE’S CLASS NEWSLETTER
Our first full week of school has gone very nicely. The students are rapidly learning classroom procedures and are trying very hard to adjust to being back in school. Please make sure you are checking and signing your child’s planner (assignment book) each night. This is to let me know you are aware of the assignments. Also please check the daily folder for items to read and keep and items to complete and return. Your child’s grades this year will come from daily work and homework, tests, and class participation. I allow the students to correct any incorrect items on homework to be re-graded for a new grade. I believe we learn best from correcting our mistakes. Please watch for graded papers or workbooks coming home, so you may encourage and help your child with corrections. If your child was at Northside last year, you will find a report of their Grade Test on reading that was taken last spring in the daily folder. Please let me know if you have any questions about this report. Attached to this newsletter is a list of items you may already buy that have Box Tops for Education coupons on the package. Please remember to clip them and send them to school with your child. Next week the students will be switching classes for reading. Third grade reading is ability grouped. You will be receiving information from your child’s reading teacher concerning expectations for their class. Please let me know if your have any questions that I can pass along to that teacher. Mrs. Stohner, the art teacher, would appreciate it if each family could send a small box of markers to be used in art class. You may want to grab a box while they are still on sale at Walmart. If your child is picked up after school, you will find your new car tags and an explanation letter in your child’s folder. We will be having a test in math next week on Friday. It will cover place value (including expanded and word form, patterns with skip-counting, odd/even numbers, and comparing and ordering whole numbers. The review pages at the end of Chapter 1 pg.20-21 are good to use for review. (Skip problems with money; we will be doing that later.) We will review in class, but extra review at home is always helpful. UPCOMING EVENTS:
