September 12, 2008

Language Arts

Next week in writing we will begin to work on writing letters. We will focus on using smooth transitions between paragraphs. In reading we will learn about text features such as index, table of contents, etc.

Social Studies (Mrs. Cecil)

Next week we will conclude our study of frontier life in Kentucky. I will also be assigning the Kentucky scrapbook project and sending info home. I plan on giving a study guide on Monday and having the test for Chapter 2 on Friday. After I assign the project if your child loses the rubric you can find it on my webpage under the corresponding link. Also, please note that if your child loses or forgets their study guide you can also find these on my webpage under the link. I will not be giving extras out in class. Have a great weekend!!

Math (Mr. Calmes)

Next week we will continue to work on unit #2 in Everyday Math. I just want to remind everyone that I grade homework based on a completed or not completed system. I look at your child’s homework each day when they enter class. I give them 10 points for doing it and 0 points if it is not completed. I have found that this system works well because the kids are more willing to ask questions if they don’t understand. They are not afraid of getting a bad grade. I also give what we call exit slips a few times a week, these are usually on an index card or a half sheet of paper. Usually I will ask them one question over the most important topic of the day and grade it. Please realize that the unit tests are by far the majority of their grade.

Science (Mrs. Ison)

This week we started our germ investigations. We swabbed items around the school such as cell phones, door knobs, computer keyboards, etc. We are waiting to see which items show the most bacteria growth. We are also testing products that claim that kill bacteria. We are testing Neosporin, rubbing alcohol and Purell hand sanitizer. We are recording our results in our science journal. We’ll let you know the results soon. Next week we will begin our big unit on plants.

Please note that midterms were sent out today. Please review this with your child, sign and return to your homeroom teacher. We will be having conferences so we can discuss these. Your child’s homeroom teacher will contact you. If you need to contact us our email addresses are:
