News and Notes from the Fourth Grade
September 19, 2008
Important Dates:
9/25 Open House 6:00-7:00 pm
9/26 No School
Language Arts:
This week in writing we will actually begin the process of writing our
letters. The kids have improved a great deal with their abilities to write
sentences and paragraphs. Please encourage your child to do their best with
this; it is a big part of the CATS test. In reading we will be working on
helping the students recognize synonyms, antonyms, and compound words. We will
also continue to work on comprehension strategies.
AR:
Please encourage your child to read in their AR books as much as
possible each night. We are still struggling to meet our AR goals.
Science (Mrs. Ison)
We are really rolling in science now. Our lab is full of different
investigations. We are testing products on germ growth, growing grass seed in
the light and in the dark and are testing bird seeds to see if they will
germinate. We are following the scientific method and recording results
daily in our science journals. We are also doing exit slips each day to make
sure we are learning concepts and vocabulary. We hope you will stop by the
science lab during Open House to see all of our cool experiments. Next
week we will continue to learn the structure and function of plants, as well as
what plants need in order to grow. Remember, the microscope paper is due
Monday!
Math (Mr. Calmes)
This week in math we will complete our study of chapter #2. We will have
a test on Wednesday or Thursday of next week.
Social Studies (Mrs. Cecil)
Next week in social studies we will begin Chapter 3 which mainly focuses
on the different regions of Kentucky and cultural aspects of living in each
region. The Kentucky Scrapbook Project has been assigned and students were given
a packet detailing the expectations for that project. If the paper is lost, the
students may download the info from my webpage. They seemed to be really excited
and enthusiastic about it! If any questions arise, please contact me. Have a
great weekend!
